After nearly eight years without a permanent home, the Studio Museum in Harlem is reopening in a stunning new building that centers Black art, Black stories, and Black community.
On November 15, 2025, the Studio Museum in Harlem opened the doors of its new $160 million, 82,000-square-foot home on West 125th Street, marking a powerful new chapter for one of the world’s leading institutions dedicated to artists of African descent. Designed by Adjaye Associates with Cooper Robertson, the seven-floor building nearly doubles the museum’s exhibition space and was created specifically with Harlem’s Black community and global visitors in mind.
The new museum blends modern architecture with familiar Harlem references—brownstone stoops, church interiors, and the energy of 125th Street—sending a clear message: Black art belongs in spaces that feel permanent, intentional, and world-class. Inaugural exhibitions showcase both historical and contemporary work by Black artists, underscoring the Studio Museum’s commitment to nurturing Black creativity for over 50 years.
For visitors, the reopening is more than a gallery experience; it’s a place to bring children, elders, and entire families to see themselves reflected on the walls. The Studio Museum’s new home stands as proof that when Black art is invested in at the highest level, everyone benefits.
