On August 6, 2025, history was made in the world of Black literature and cultural preservation. The National Association of Black Bookstores (NAB2) officially launched as the first national collective uniting Black-owned bookstores across the United States.

The organization’s mission is clear: to strengthen the reach of Black-owned bookstores, amplify diverse literary voices, and safeguard the heritage these spaces represent. Founding members include legendary establishments such as Marcus Books (Oakland), Hakim’s Bookstore (Philadelphia), Marshall’s Music and Book Store (Jackson), and Source Booksellers (Detroit).

Beyond books, NAB2 envisions programming, workshops, and author events that not only inform and inspire but also create pathways for new generations of Black writers and entrepreneurs.

Black bookstores are cultural hubs—safe spaces for community dialogue, intellectual exchange, and the celebration of Black excellence. Their survival and growth are essential for maintaining a thriving cultural narrative.

Support a Black-owned bookstore near you or online. Your purchase is more than a transaction—it’s an investment in our cultural legacy.
